ABOUT THIS TOOV

Suppose you buy an old car and take it into the Australian outback. Suppose it breaks down in the middle of nowhere and just imagine what would happen if you had no idea how to survive.

So we bought an old car, drove it further and further into the outback, stopped, looked around and decided to take a crash bush tucker course.

In Tennant Creek we met Jimmy Hooker, the Bush Tucker Man of the Barkly (look for him in the Outback Caravan park) and he showed us there is no need to starve to death in the Australian bush.

Cause you can eat bush bananas, suck the juice out of pigweed and lemon grass, open a bush coconut and eat the watery worm that lives inside and if you're still hungry you can look for witchetty grubs. They are big white grubs, living in the root system of the Acacia kempeana, better known as witchetty bush.

If you're starving, you better eat the grubs raw. BBqued they taste even better. And if you do bbq them, why not complete your meal with an Australian damper:

2 cups of self-rising flour
0,5 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons sugar
3 tablespoons butter
2 cups of milk

Mix the flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter until fine crumbs form. Add milk to make a soft dough. Knead lightly until smooth. Shape into round loaf, brush with milk, wrap in in aluminium foil and bake in the fire until the loaf makes a hollow sound when tapped.

If you happen to be well prepared while breaking down in the middle of nowhere: all this goes very well with an Australian Chardonnay.
