ABOUT THIS TOOV

The best way to explore the beauty of the Dutch wetlands the Hollansche Biesbosch is by canoe.
We got our canoes at the visitor centre and we took off for a two hour trip trough the hart of the Kikvorsch of Otter.
At first we practised a bit at the Moldiep, a relatively broad water where you can feel the current that penetrates this system twice a day.
We zig zagged and splashed ,and made our way to the smaller creeks.
The small creeks turned into narrow creeks filled with mud and sometimes almost blocked by trees cut down by beavers.
On the banks we discovered the unmistakable beavertracks: the beaver moves his big tail from side to side, and makes big cuts in the mud.
In the water we found a log, cut out of a tree and precisly stripped from its bark .The beaver uses small logs like this for nesting material, for constructing his dams he uses longer logs.
The current brought us slowly back to our starting point while we enjoyed the autumn sun.

According to the latest counts there are about 260 beavers living in Holland right now. Most of them are living in 'de Biesbosch' (at least a hundred). Given the fact that beavers like a clean environment this must be good news!
