ABOUT THIS TOOV

Some say it’s 114 metres high, some say 107 or 104. It does not matter. It’s high, and huge: the “Dune du Pyla”, in fact it’s the highest dune in Europe.

From the “summit” you have a beautiful view on endless pine forest to the east and the Atlantic ocean to the west. The south part of the dune is the home of the paragliders.

As all dunes do, this giant moves! Each year it is moving about 4 m into the forest. Every once in a while, roads and houses disappear in avalanches of sand.
So it is actually moving quite fast. This is what you experience if you approach these dunes from the north east, it is as if they are moving towards you: suddenly they're there.

As you can see in the pictures, la dune du pyla attracts a steady stream of tourists. Perhaps a TOOV challenge, try to visit this place with no one else around?
