ABOUT THIS TOOV

When Khan asks why Polo never mentions Venice, Polo says, 'Every time I describe a city I am saying something about Venice. . . . To distinguish the other cities' qualities, I must speak of a first city that remains implicit. For me it is Venice.' [p. 86]
From Italo Calvino – the invisible cities

For me, this line is the perfect way to describe Venice as the archetype city. And it shows the dependency a book can have on a city and vice versa. This is a two way TOOV. In his book ‘the invisible cities’, Italo Calvino describes every city by one characteristic aspect. But not mentioning the name. These descriptions are a unique combination of fantastic, fairy tail like elements and an analytic view of matter.

Traveling to Venice or any other city with this prejudice is risky. The mysticism could be crossed by a live experience that doesn’t fit. The other risk is a perfect match which results in a 1 1=3 life long affection.
